Our Curriculum
Due to the nature of learning differences, our unique grading system involves two areas of academics, Student Participation and Student Performance, to capture progress made.
Each student has an individual report card with corresponding goals that are developmentally appropriate in each learning area, aligning with state standards.
We utilize a series of materials modeling the research of Dr. Karen Erickson, and with relevant training for staff, learning materials can be differentiated to support students with varying needs.

What Sets Us Apart?
River Academy of Excellence is a sister company to River Pediatric Therapies, founded in 2000 by owner and CEO, Cherie River, who was inspired to become a Speech Language Pathologist when her nephew Harrison was born with Down Syndrome. Cherie spent the first 8 years of her career in Pittsburgh Public Schools, giving her "on the job" experience to develop a school-based model to deliver services.
We at River Academy of Excellence are passionate about providing the highest quality of care for each student. We provide therapy that works to involve teachers and family in treatment plans, and ensures that goes are functional across all environments. River therapists are trained to evaluate the function behind each goal and how it can affect your child in and out of the classroom.
River prioritizes building positive relationships with students and families as a basis for a healthy working partnership. We believe that parents are incredibly important to their child's education. Teachers communicate weekly and ongoing parent communication with staff is welcomed and encouraged.

Our Physical Therapy have a doctorate-level education and follow PA certification requirements.
River Academy of Excellence understands that each student is unique, and takes family concerns, teacher input, and administration direction into consideration when determining if physical therapy services are appropriate in the school setting.
Types of services our PTs can provide include:
Posture, walking, and sitting techniques for classroom participation
Strengthening and range of motion activities
Endurance activities for participation in school-related events
Development of gross motor skills
Balance and coordination techniques
Functional mobility skills

Our Occupational Therapists are licensed and follow PA certification requirements.
